Leading Expert on Heroin/Opioid Addiction Coming to Broome County

Binghamton, NY – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston joined members of the Broome Opioid Abuse Council (BOAC) and the Community Foundation for South Central New York to announce that Dr. Andrew Kolodny will be delivering a free presentation/training in Binghamton.

The presentation, “Responding to the Opioid/Heroin Addiction Epidemic,” will take place on Tuesday, June 7th at the Forum Theatre in Binghamton from 12:00 – 4:00 pm.

“This is another step in our multi-pronged approach to fighting this monster in our community,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.  “Dr. Kolodny’s qualifications speak for themselves and his expertise and knowledge will go a long way to solving the heroin problem in our own back yard.”

Dr. Kolodny’s presentation will describe the scope of the prescription opioid and heroin crisis, its historical context, contributing factors and lines of evidence indicating the role of addiction in exacerbating morbidity and mortality and he will provide the framework for developing interventions to address the epidemic of opioid addiction.

“He’s one of the foremost experts in the field of opioid misuse in the entire Country,” says Carole Cassidy, BOAC Coordinator.  “We believe his presentation, along with the work that’s already being done in this community, will take us one step closer to bringing about a solution.”

“The Community Foundation and the Grants Committee felt that co-sponsoring Dr. Kolodny’s presentation/training was a great use of funds,” says Diane Brown, Executive Director for the Community Foundation of South Central New York.

The day will start at noon as local treatment providers will be on hand to talk about their programs.

Dr. Kolodny’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will start around 1:00 pm and last approximately two hours.

After the presentation, the treatment providers will be available for another hour to talk about the services they provide.
